Public Speaking

I am a qualified educator and I can be booked for talks on a variety of subjects. Obviously ancient history and mythology are my main strengths, but I can also provide instructive talks about creative writing for publication, presentations at book clubs, and similar services by arrangement. My main strength is that I am an entirely self-taught author who has learned his craft over long years of patience and persistence. I am self-represented and have never used a literary agent or attended any writers’ workshops, for instance. The advice I can offer potential authors is based on hard-earned experience of publishing and marketing, and I can take budding authors through the process of approaching publishers in a way which will make them interested in the initial proposal – all the way to how to plan and produce the finished product. I am fully aware of how difficult it is to become a published author – and I can provide encouragement based on my own experience – and a genuine belief that becoming a good writer doesn’t have to be an impossible dream!

Pre-Christian Religion in the Severn Valley Area.

Martin presented a talk for the Wolverley Historical Society on the 13th May 2019.

Topics Include

Historical Talks

I offer a bespoke service to historical societies and groups. My emphasis is on more ancient history – pre-1066! I am able to cover other periods, however. The scope of my research is national, but I have a very strong interest in local (that is, Midlands) history too.

Creative writing

How do you become a serious creative writer? It isn’t easy, but it can be done. By sharing my own ‘pathway to publication’, first through ‘Democratic Publishing’ and then professionally, I share the highs and lows, the snags, pitfalls and rewards of going into print. Ideal for writers’ workshops and book clubs.

Publishing & Marketing

One of the most serious drawbacks for a budding author, is insufficient understanding of how publishers work! It was certainly true in my case, until a published author shared with me a few handy tips for getting your ideas noticed. I have always been thankful for his sage advice – simple but effective strategies for getting that first publishing contract!
